Is an Automatic Irrigation System Worth It in the UK?

A small single-zone irrigation system starts from about £600. Smart systems can reduce water use by 40–70% compared with uncontrolled hand watering when they are designed for the actual pressure, flow and planting.

What does an irrigation system actually cost to run?

The running cost depends on how the system is controlled rather than its size. A timer that waters on a fixed schedule regardless of weather will use more water than hand watering. A controller with a rain sensor or soil-moisture sensor only waters when the ground needs it, which is where the 40–70% reduction in consumption comes from. On a metered supply the saving typically offsets a meaningful share of the annual water bill, and the system pays back fastest on properties with large lawns, extensive borders or many containers.

How is a system designed for a specific garden?

Available flow and pressure are measured first, because they determine how many sprinklers can run at once and therefore how the garden is divided into zones. Lawns are covered by retractable pop-up sprinklers, while borders, hedges and containers are served by drip lines that deliver water directly to the root zone with far less evaporation loss. Each zone runs independently, so planting with different water requirements is not forced onto the same schedule.

When does an irrigation system make sense?

It is most useful for established lawns, hedges, borders and gardens that need reliable watering during dry periods. Separate sprinkler and drip zones allow water to reach the root zone rather than paths and paving.

What happens in winter?

Pipework should be drained or blown clear before frost. A winter service prevents freeze damage and prepares the system for the following season.
