Why do quotations differ so much?

Most of the difference sits in work that cannot be seen once the job is finished: excavation depth, a properly compacted sub-base, edge restraints and drainage falls. A patio laid without these will move and crack within a few winters, so a materially cheaper quotation is usually a narrower scope rather than better value.

What is included in a proper quotation?

A written scope should identify excavation, sub-base, drainage falls, materials, access and waste. The cheapest price often excludes the groundwork that determines whether the finished work lasts.

How should a garden budget be planned?

Start with drainage and levels, then hard landscaping, structures and planting. This prevents finished surfaces being disturbed for work that should have happened first.
